Scouting in Ceredigion is Growing!

Scouting in Ceredigion has seen nearly a 30% increase in youth membership during 2008.  However we still have young people on waiting lists waiting to join in.

Scouting is open to all ages and both boys and girls.  Scout Groups are spread across the County.  2008 saw the opening of 3 new Scout Groups in the Area, 1st Pencader Scout Group, Aberaeron Sea Scout Group and 1st Tregaron Scout Group.

Scouting has been in Aberystwyth for 100 Years now and an exhibition starts in the museum on Friday celebrating 100 Years of Scouting in Aberystwyth.  The exhibition will be launched with activities and displays in the Bandstand on Saturday afternoon.  Come along to see the fun and adventure Scouting has to offer.

The Area now has a new Area (County) Commissioner.  Scouting is a Youth Led Movement and Ceredigion now has the youngest Area Commissioner in Wales.  Jim will be looking to continue the increase in membership over the next year.  This will be based on the recruitment of adult volunteers.  Scouting relies on adults to provide the adventure for young people.

Adults can get as much fulfilment as the young members do.  It is rewarding to know that you are helping and contributing to young people’s development and their understanding of the world.  It is possible to be part of the fun and adventure while encouraging them to be active members of the local community.

Volunteers are not giving something up but are gaining the opportunity to develop and share skills such as leadership.  Scouting has a well developed training scheme which could be a step towards a new career.
