Scouts and Guides from across southern Ceredigion gathered on Saturday to celebrate Thinking Day and Founders Day. Over 100 young people and adults started the day with a short parade along the High Street in Newcastle Emlyn to Holy Trinity Church. A short Service was conducted by Rev. Dewi Roberts and attended by the Town Mayor, Cllr Hazel Evans with other representatives of the town council and Cllr Haydn Jones from Carmarthenshire County Council. The service commemorated the lives of Lord Robert Baden-Powell and his wife, Olave, who were both born on the 22nd February. 22nd February 2007 was the 150th anniversary of Baden-Powell’s birth. Baden-Powell started the Scout Movement 100 years ago with a camp on Brownsea Island. Over the last 100 years the Movement has grown to over 28 million members World-wide. Girlguiding started a few years later, in 1910, when Baden-Powell decided to do something for girls. Scouting is open to both boys and girls. Scouting and Guiding welcome young people and adults of any race, colour or creed.
In the afternoon nearly 150 young people descended on Newcastle Emlyn Leisure Centre and school, for a fun-packed afternoon of activities. Activities included Laser Combat, Archery, Parachute games, 5-a-side football, food tasting, camping skills, and crafts. At the end of the day there were some very tired Beavers, Cubs, Scouts, Rainbows, Brownies and Guides!
To enable the day to take place grants were received from the Wakeham Trust and Newcastle Emlyn Town Council. A donation was also made by Ceredigion County Councillor Tywyn Evans who was unable to attend. We are very grateful for their continued support.
